Kurashiki’s Kura : A Once-in-a-Lifetime Tea Hospitality

open

Hospitality by the current owner of a 150-year-old kimono shop

Experience the art of Japanese tea ceremony in the historic town of Kurashiki, guided by an experienced instructor in the traditional Urasenke style.

This special tea ceremony takes place in a renovated kura (storehouse) built in 1831, within a kimono shop that has been in business for 150 years. The current owner of the shop will personally prepare tea for you using the Bonryaku temae method.

Located just beyond the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, you will walk through a charming local street where you can catch a glimpse of everyday life in Kurashiki. The tea ceremony is held in a secluded space behind a kimono shop, surrounded by beautifully preserved traditional houses.

Immerse yourself in the local culture while experiencing one of Japan’s most treasured traditions.

An English interpreter will be available to provide a detailed explanation of the history and etiquette of the tea ceremony.

Enjoy a moment of “wabi-sabi” in a space that blends Japanese and Western influences, as the 150-year-old kimono shop’s owner welcomes you with a bowl of matcha.

For those who wish, there is also an optional hands-on experience where you can prepare your own tea.

Step away from the bustling tourist areas and into a peaceful, authentic neighborhood, where you can experience the heart of Japanese tradition in a beautifully restored kura.
